In March this year 127 children under 18 in the Fukushima prefecture when the accident occurred, have developed thyroid cancer, (normal incidence is 1 to 2 per million). Thyroid cancer appears early post radiation exposure, leukemia occurs 5 to 10 years post exposure, solid cancers from 15 to 80 years.
No-one is officially collecting data on other cancers and leukemia, all of which can be caused by radiation.
The only biological data on the effects of Fukushima is being done by Tim Mousseau, evolutionary biologist who is studying the birds, and insects in the exclusion zones of Fukushima and Chernobyl and is recording genetic mutations, tumors, small brain size, and sterility in 40% of the male barn swallows. What happens to animals happens to humans.
The radiological damage is increased enormously when people eat food containing radioactive elements such as cesium 137, strontium 90 radioactive iodine and many others. These toxic contaminants are tasteless, odourless and invisible.
This biological and medical data could well be applied to Boston, Cape Cod and surrounding populations should a catastrophic accident occur within the next 4 years until before the plant is finally shut down.
